Brent Birnbaum’s site-specific installation is composed from hundreds of trash-bound Ikea shelves, that the artist collected from the street and craigslist. Believing that the purchase, then ultimate disposal of Ikea furniture signifies a rite of passage into adulthood, Birnbaum’s installation represents countless stories with one common thread: that upon trashing their utilitarian furniture for the masses, have all achieved a new level of maturity, yet one that is still defined by assimilation.
